FLASH FLOODS: HOW TO PREPARE FOR WHEN WATERS RISE

FLASH FLOODS: HOW TO PREPARE FOR WHEN WATERS RISE

The recent flash floods that devastated parts of Texas in May 2024 served as a stark reminder of the power and danger of these sudden deluges. While we can't control the weather, there are steps we can take to protect ourselves and our loved ones when flash floods strike. Here's how to be prepared and reduce your risk.

Prepare Your Home for the Downpour

Know Your Flood Risk: Investigate your neighborhood's flood risk zones. Is your home in a low-lying area or near waterways? Understanding your risk helps you prioritize actions.

Maintain Proper Drainage: Clean out clogged gutters and drainage ditches around your foundation. This ensures water flows freely away from your home during heavy rain.

Seal the Leaks: Inspect your basement or crawlspace for cracks or openings. Seal them up to prevent water from seeping in. Consider waterproofing your basement walls for added protection.

Flood Barriers: If you’re in a high-risk area, it’s recommended to invest in flood barriers like sandbags or water dams. These can be deployed around doorways to block floodwaters from entering your home.

Assemble Your Emergency Flood Kit

Don't Wait Until the Rain Starts: Maintain a well-stocked emergency kit well before flood season arrives. Include essentials like:

  • Non-perishable food (enough for 3 days)
  • Bottled water (one gallon per person per day)
  • First-aid kit
  • Flashlights with extra batteries
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Important documents (copies of insurance, ID, etc.) in a waterproof container

Tech Essentials: Charge your phone and a portable power bank to stay connected during power outages.

Be Weather Wise: Stay Informed and Act Fast

Sign Up for Local Alerts: Get connected to your local National Weather Service office's alerts. These will warn you of flash flood watches and warnings in your area.

Monitor the Forecast: Stay glued to weather reports, especially during heavy rain events. Look for signs of rising water levels or flash flood warnings.

Don't Gamble with Floodwaters: The phrase "Turn around, don't drown" applies here too. Never attempt to drive through floodwaters. The current can be deceptively strong, and even a few inches of moving water can be dangerous.

Remember: Every Second Counts

Have an Evacuation Plan: Discuss evacuation routes and meeting points with your family beforehand. Knowing where to go and how to get there quickly can save precious time.

Practice Makes Perfect: Conduct a practice evacuation drill with your family. This familiarizes everyone with the plan and reduces confusion during an actual emergency.

By following these steps, you can be prepared when flash floods strike.  Remember, a little preparation can go a long way in protecting yourself and your loved ones from the dangers of flash floods.
